Hyperpigmentation/ Melasma

Hyperpigmentation is a prevalent skin condition characterised by the presence of dark spots or patches on the skin, often appearing in shades of brown, black, gray, red, or pink. These areas of pigmentation can vary in size and may manifest as freckles, age spots, or larger patches of darkened skin. This condition occurs when specialised skin cells produce an excess amount of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin coloration.
Skin color is primarily determined by melanin, a pigment produced by skin cells. When these cells become damaged or unhealthy, they may produce excessive melanin, resulting in the appearance of darker patches. Several factors can contribute to this process, including:
  • Adrenal Disorders: Conditions such as Addison’s disease, characterised by insufficient cortisol production
  • Genetics: Some individuals may have a genetic predisposition to develop freckles or pigmentation irregularities.
  • Hormonal Fluctuations: Changes in hormone levels during puberty, pregnancy, or menopause can influence melanin production.
  • Skin Trauma: Injuries like acne, cuts, or burns may trigger post inflammatory hyperpigmentation
  • Medications: Certain medications, such as oral contraceptives, can increase sensitivity to sunlight, leading to pigmentation issues.
  • Thyroid Disorders: Conditions affecting the thyroid gland, such as hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, may contribute to pigmentation irregularities.
How the Treatment Works
At Novalee SkinTech Clinic, our hyperpigmentation/melasma treatment protocol is designed to target all contributing layers of the condition, rather than addressing pigmentation alone. Melasma is complex, involving pigment, vascular activity, and deeper inflammatory processes – so our approach treats each component individually for safer, long-lasting results.
We begin by treating the underlying vasculature of the skin. Increased blood flow and vascular activity can drive melasma, so calming these vessels helps reduce inflammation and limit future pigment stimulation. The pigmented areas are then gently treated to break down excess melanin. This gradually lightens the visible patches without overheating the skin.
A targeted RF Microneedling pass is performed, which creates precise micro-channels in the skin. This stage may leave tiny blood spots in the treated areas. These are completely normal, settle quickly, and typically heal within 1–2 days, supporting natural regeneration and deeper pigment correction.
While the melasma patches are the focus, the surrounding skin is also lightly treated. This ensures a smooth, natural blend with minimal demarcation between the treated melasma and the rest of the face.

advice2

Post-Treatment Advice: Do not pick and scratch treated area. It may appear as a dry skin patch and sometimes a scab will form over the treated area. There will be some redness where you have been treated. The skin will also be a little dry and require moisturising, sometimes the skin gently peels – again this depends on the treatment regime we decide on with you. You will be advised to use a sunscreen factor 50 for a minimum of 2 weeks before and after treatment. If you do not continue to use sunscreen then you are going to expose your skin to the risk of further sun damage.
